Specializing in local government law, land development law, litigation and general business law, the firm has the combined total of eighty years of experience among its attorneys, including particular expertise in the following areas:

  • General counsel to special districts, home rule, statutory, and territorial towns and cities, and county sheriffs.

  • Litigation of land use matters as defense counsel to municipalities, as plaintiff's counsel in the well-known Margolis and Eggert cases, and have represented municipal clients in several land use, governmental immunity and condemnation cases of first impression, including Grynberg v. City of Northglenn, Town of Parker v. Colorado Division of Parks, and Town of Parker v. Norton.

  • Defense of local governments, including law enforcement officials, against civil rights suits brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983.

  • Employment law, including defense of wrongful discharge cases, public employee collective bargaining, the Fair Labor Standards Act and other types of federal regulation, and development of policies, procedures, contracts and ordinances that help the public employer avoid liability. 

  • Election law, including representation of both petitioners and municipalities for initiative, referendum and recall special elections.

  • Construction contract drafting and construction claims litigation.

  • Drafting legislation, lobbying and testifying before legislative committees.

  • Amendment One implementation and litigation, including litigation of Stecher v. Northglenn and Cerveny v. Wheat Ridge.

  • Eminent domain actions, including acting as special counsel for the Denver Water Department.

  • Experience in water resources and environmental regulation.

As attorneys specializing in governmental law, we have been actively involved in the newly adopted legislative enactments bearing upon tort law, governmental immunity, open meetings, open records, antitrust, land use and law enforcement.  A major function of our position as City Attorney for various municipalities and General Counsel for special districts is to keep ourselves and our clients abreast of proposed and adopted legislation of this type.
